No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
