British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
