EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
