Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
